Jean Hérard Richard, better known as Richie, a major figure in Haitian konpa direct.
Early Life & Education
- Born October 4, 1969, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
- Grew up in Cap-Haïtien and did his schooling there: attended institutions such as the Frères de l’Instruction Chrétienne (F.I.C.), Collège Notre Dame, Lycée Philippe Guerrier.
- As a child, he had an early affinity for music — always banging on tins, pots, etc. By adolescence he was leading the music section of his school.
Musical Beginnings & Influences
- His first bands included Power X and Fashion, formed with schoolmates from Lycée Philippe Guerrier.
- In the early 1990s, while living in the U.S., he studied music technology. Before embracing konpa direct fully, he dabbled in punk, heavy metal, reggae, etc.
- He co-founded a band called Tah-Paj with Gazzmann Pierre, Arly Larivière, and Nixon Mésidor.
Rise with Zenglen
- In 1997, Richie joined the prominent Haitian band Zenglen, invited by Jean Brutus Dérissaint (“Brutus”).
- With Zenglen, he played drums, composed, produced several hits and was central to their musical direction. Some of the songs/albums during his time include Easy Konpa, Let It Groove, 5 Etwal, Le Konpa, etc.

Founding KLASS & Later Work
- In 2011, Richie left Zenglen and founded his own band, KLASS.
- The formation of Klass included band members like El Pozo, Nixon Mésidor, Hervé Bastien, and lead vocals by Pipo Stanis (“Pipo”).
- They have released several albums, notably Fè l vini avan (2013), Fè l ak tout kè w (2016), Ret nan liy ou (2019).
Style, Legacy & Contributions
- Richie is well-regarded not just as a performer, but also as an arranger, composer, producer, and bandleader.
- He bridges traditional konpa direct with more modern sounds, and has contributed significantly to the growth and international visibility of Haitian music.
- He has helped develop other artists, and his work is seen as influential in both the older and younger generation of Haitian musicians.
